What Are HEPA Filters And Why Should Your Vacuum Robot Have One?

Robots vacuum cleaners are a great advantage when it comes to doing cleaning chores at home. Having one of these vacuums has a lot of benefits, there’s no denying it. It allows the owner a more efficient cleaning, without having to put much physical effort, and it is quite easy to use. These are a good investment for any home, and there are many on the market to fit any budget. They are filled with amazing features, like being programmed to work at any day or hours desired and to even create an invisible wall, which the robot won’t trespass and where you can store anything you want the robot to avoid – all of this controlled by a smartphone! Plus, it has the capacity of cleaning different surfaces, either wood or stone, and even carpets. With no need for any assistance, as new tech advances appear, the chances of having problems or flaws are less and they become even more helpful.

We’re currently living in a pandemic world, and having a clean and disinfected place is more important than ever, and that’s why we are here today. One of the most important features that the best robot vacuum and mop combo has can have is the HEPA filters. Today, we will give a quick explanation about them and why we are all excited about them. Let’s dig in.

HEPA Filters

The History Of HEPA Filters

The HEPA filters were developed for the first time in the beginning of the 1940s. The first moment it was used was by the US army chemical corps and National Defense Research, as part of the Manhattan Project. There was a necessity of creating a filter that would clean the air from radioactive particles. Since this project took part during World War II, the first design of this filter was inspired by gas masks. Only a decade later, in the 1950s, was when these filters started to be commercialized to eliminate from the air, not radioactive particles, but dust, bacteria, and pollens. They started to be used by hospitals, industries, pharmaceuticals and had an essential role in the slowing down of disease spreads. Today they can be easily found and were adapted to new types of equipment, like robot vacuums.

What Are These?

The acronym HEPA translates to “high-efficiency particulate air”. This is a type of filter that has the capacity to catch even the tiniest particles in the air, which most devices can’t even detect. They work as a way to purify the air in the house, and they can be a part of the vacuums or built-in separate, as specific purifying devices.

How Do These Filters Work?

HEPA filters are made of interlaced glass fibers and through these fiberglasses, they are able to create a net, where the particles that contaminate the air are caught, like in a big spider web.

However, there are four different ways these particles can be grabbed, which are Sieving, Diffusion, Interception, and Inertial Impaction. Some are absorbed through the impact method, where some particles, especially the larger ones, usually move straight in and end up moving towards the filter. Sieving is when the particle goes towards two fibers and, since it is bigger, it gets stuck between them. The smallest, ultrafine particles get stuck to the fibers more easily through diffusion. Interception is when the particles adhere to the filter, following the airflow, as their path ends up leading to the filter. Nevertheless, it’s important to mention that they also need to be cleaned and the filters changed, to guarantee they work just fine, otherwise, it will put in jeopardy the efficiency of the HEPA filters.

What Are the Advantages of This Filter?

A HEPA filter will always be beneficial to have at home. It purifies the air, making a more healthy environment. However, this is a plus for anyone who has allergies, because it filters the particles that make allergies way worse. This doesn’t mean only dust and other particles of the same type, but also bacteria and mold spores. These are not only in the air, but on the floors, carpets, and other surfaces. That’s the reason why your robot vacuum should have one of these filters, as while it vacuums the dust on floors and rugs, it will also catch these particles on the other surfaces, too. It’s so much better and healthier.

HEPA Filters Are Important

These are very good for any house, but for any person who has to deal with the annoyance of having allergies, it can be quite awful what these particles can do. Having a filter like this will make it easier and avoid the chance of getting worse, and if it’s part of your vacuum, it’s even better! I hope this helped you understand what really are these HEPA filters and you’ve learned more about the way they work and how helpful they can be.
